Legs (Begin Here – Make 2)

  1. R1: Magic ring, 6 SC

  2. R2: INC x6

  3. R3: INC, SC (× 6) (if using really plush yarn, you may need to omit this round. see bottom for pictures of different plush yarns.)

  4. R4: Inc, 2sc, (x6) ( x5 if R3 not done)

  5. R5: SC (18 if round 3 not done) 24 total stitches.

  6. R6: Dec, SC (x5) (x3 if R3 omitted) then 9SC to finish the round.

  7. R7: Dec, 2 SC (x5) (x3 if R 3 omitted) then 9SC to finish the round.

  8. R8: 2 SC, Dec, 4SC, Dec, 4SC. (If round 3 omitted then do 3 SC instead of the 4SC)

  9. R9: SC

  10. R10: Dec X6 (x5 if round 3 omitted) Stuff foot enough for it to hold it’s shape.

  11. R11: Find the second line from the top or R9 and place stitch marker. Put hook through the side of the stitch, and pull a loop through. Then begin to make 12 SC around the outside of the foot.

  12. R12: Inc, 2SC (= 16 stitches when round is finished).

  13. R13: 16 SC

  14. R14: Inc, 3SC repeat to stitch marker.

  15. R15: SC

  16. R16: Inc, 4SC

  17. R17: SC, on last stitch where the marker is, do a slip stitch and cut the yarn and pull through. Do this for both legs.

Body (Built from Leg Join)

  1. Lay the legs flat side by side with the feet pointing towards you. Use stitch markers to join the touching sides of the legs together, this makes it easier to handle and not loose the place where you need to join them.

  2. R1: Begin from top outer side of leg—pick one of the side stitches and count 14 stitches to where the inner sides meet. the 14th stitch should be in the middle of the two legs where the touch. Take your yarn and begin crocheting SC around both legs to join, starting from the outside stitch that you started your count from.

  3. R2: Sc around again.

  4. R3: Dec on first stitch, then SC until the opposite side and 1Dec, then SC to marker

  5. R4: Sc all the way around.

  6. R5: 1 Dec, SC middle, 1 Dec on side, SC middle.

  7. R6: SC

There are many types of plush yarn to work with to give this lovey an ultra-soft feel for baby. starting from the left in the picture above, these types will create a HUGE lovey, the length of the fibers, the density of the yarn all contribute to that factor. the middle section will create a medium-large lovey, but the density of the fibers will make it very squishy and soft. The one on the right will make a medium lovey and it will still be soft but not as squishy.

Normally I would recommend you buy from the links that I put in my blogs because I have tried them and know which to use for my loveys, but when starting out, I highly recommend going to a craft store and feeling the yarn yourself. Knowing what the yarn feels like can give you an idea about what your project will look like and if it’s the appropriate thickness and density that you need for what you want to make. (Eg.) the yarn on the left is best for making blankets that feel full and chunky without huge gaps in it. The yarn on the right makes the perfect size lovey in my opinion. So, get out there and touch some yarn, it’s all part of the creative process.
