Step 1: Make Your Granny Squares

Basic Plush Granny Square Pattern

Round 1:

  • Make a magic ring.

  • Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc into ring, ch 2.

  • (3 dc, ch 2) repeat 3 more times.

  • Join with sl st to top of ch-3. Pull ring tight.

Round 2:

  • Sl st to next ch-2 space.

  • Ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in same space.

  • (3 dc in next space, ch 2, 3 dc) around.

  • Join with sl st.

Repeat rounds until your square is about 6–7 inches wide. Most cardigans use 24–30 squares depending on size and sleeve length.

Step 2: Layout & Assembly

Suggested Layout:

  • Back: 6 squares (2 wide × 3 tall)

  • Front panels: 3 squares each

  • Sleeves: 4 squares per sleeve

  • Optional hood or collar: 2–4 squares

Lay out your squares on a flat surface to visualize the cardigan. Use stitch markers to plan placement.

Joining Squares:

Use the whip stitch or slip stitch method with a yarn needle or hook. Plush yarn hides seams beautifully!

Step 3: Add Sleeves

Fold sleeve squares into a tube and sew the edges. Attach to the armholes using whip stitch. You can taper the sleeves slightly by overlapping edges or adding decreases if crocheting in the round.

Step 4: Finishing Touches

  • Collar or edging: Add a row of single crochet around the opening for a clean finish.

  • Optional buttons: Sew on large buttons and use ch spaces as buttonholes.

  • Weave in ends: Use a yarn needle to tuck in all loose ends securely.

Tips for Working with Plush Yarn

  • Use good lighting—plush yarn can be tricky to see stitches.

  • Keep tension loose to avoid splitting.

  • Don’t worry about perfection—plush yarn is very forgiving!
